Abstract

In a two-year prospective study of 99 surgical procedures consisting mostly of spinal deformity operations, red blood cells were recovered from the wound, washed, and returned to the patient. There were no significant complications. The procedure is safe, practical, and has reduced total intraoperative blood loss by 50% now in 135 cases.
