HE development of a technique and a philosophy in the treatment of acoustic neurinomas has been one of logical evolutionary growth over the past half century. In 1913 at the International Congress of Medicine in London it was concluded that the outlook for patients harboring such lesions was essentially hopeless. However, in 1917 Cushing's 3 description of his method for intracapsular removal, with a mortality of less than ~0 per cent, was the first major break-through towards the successful management of these lesions.
