The repellent N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide (deet) was first synthesized by McCabe et al. (1954) and first tested as a repellent by King (1954). Since that time it has gained wide acceptance as an effective repellent, and it is currently sold under more than 20 trade names in the U.S. (Billings 1975). Its repellent activity bas been demonstrated in more than 20 genera of insects to date (Rutledge et al. 1978).
