A piece of the π! In the presence of PtCl2, NiII tetraalkynylporphyrin complex undergoes a six-endo-dig-type cyclization to form two unusual structural isomers of NiII bisphenanthroporphyrins. Under the same conditions, NiII dialkynylpicenoporphyrin forms the extended NiII picenophenanthroporphyrin (see scheme). These otherwise inaccessible π-fused exocyclic porphyrins were characterized by 2D NMR and show strongly redshifted electronic spectra.
