Abstract The mass spectra of a number of cymantrenyl‐, ferrocenyl‐ and benchrotrenylcarbinols have been studied. The elimination of water molecules from the molecular ions proceeds by the 1,2‐elimination mechanism involving hydroxyl transfer to the metal. The [M–16] + ions originate from thermal decomposition of the compounds studied in the inlet system.
