A high energy γ-ray scanning system has been described which has been applied to locating areas of increased concentration of γ-ray emitting isotopes in the body, and also to the measurement of retention of an administered isotope. The localisation feature of this scanner has been useful in the finding of lesions in the body and in studies of the metabolic behaviour of these lesions as a function of time, and as a function of the administration of either drugs or radiation. The total body counting feature of this scanner has proved to be an effective and much more simple alternative to the collections of urines and stools in the determination of total body retention.
