Abstract A system of zero phonon lines is observed within the 23200 cm −1 excitation band of Mn 2+ in ZnS. By site selecting laser spectroscopy four zero phonon lines are identified due to Mn 2+ at cubic lattice site (AN) and also at the main polymorphic lattice sites (AS, PN). A similar structure is registered due to the nearly hexagonal site (PS). The zero phonon lines of Mn 2+ at polymorphic sites are shifted in energy with respect to those of Mn 2+ at the cubic site. The energy shift is correlated to the shift of zero phonon lines observed within the three lower energy excitation bands.
