THE CONSOLIDATION OF A SEMI-INFINITE SOLID WHEN A UNIFORM TANGENTIAL LOAD IS APPLIED TO THE SURFACE IS STUDIED. THE THEORY FOR A TANGENTIAL SURFACE LOAD IS DEVELOPED IN TERMS OF THREE DISPLACEMENT FUNCTIONS. RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN STRESSES, DISPLACEMENTS, EXCESS PORE PRESSURES, AND THE DISPLACEMENT FUNCTIONS ARE GIVEN. THE PROBLEM OF A UNIT TANGENTIAL LOAD UNIFORMLY DISTRIBUTED OVER A CIRCULAR AREA IS SOLVED, BY HANKEL-LAPLACE TRANSFORM TECHNIQUES.
