This article presents a short but detailed description of the optophone-its origins as a reading device for the blind, the various stages of its development, and the possibility of its use as a mobility aid for the blind. Research into the use of stereo vision is described as an aid to information reduction, in the hope of remedying the problems of information overload that commonly plague electronic blind aids.
