Abstract

Large eddy simulations (LES) of a subsonic plane jet at a Mach number of 0.9 and a Reynolds number of 2000 have been carried out using different subgrid scale (SGS) models. The performance of these SGS models has been compared with direct numerical simulation of the plane jet. The principal aim of this work is to assess the influence on the far-field sound prediction of the various numerical and modeling choices. The Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings (FW-H) approach is applied with surface sources computed from LES to predict far-field sound radiation from the plane jet. A useful frequency range is identified, limited at the lower end by spanwise box size and at the upper end by numerical resolution. Changes in the predicted sound during jet evolution from an initial symmetric response to a later asymmetric sinuous response are discussed along with the influence of the SGS model.
