Electric Motors in Industrial applications consume between 30% and 40% of the generated electrical energy worldwide. In the European Union (EU), electric motor systems are by far the most important type of load in industry, using about 70% of the consumed electricity. In the tertiary sector (nonresidential buildings), although not so relevant, electric motor systems use about one-third of the electricity consumed. Their wide use makes electric motors particularly attractive for the application of efficiency improvements. Despite the wide variety of electric motors available in the market, three-phase, squirrel-cage induction motors (IMs) represent, by far, the vast majority of the market of electric motors [1], [2].
