Abstract

Tumor bed effect (TBE) was evaluated by determining the TD50 (number of cells expected to transplant the tumor into half of the recipients) for tumor cells transplanted into normal or previously irradiated tissues. Two animal tumor systems were employed: a C3H mouse mammary carcinoma and a C3H mouse fibrosarcoma; recipient mice were (C3H/He × C57B1) F1. Results showed that the TD50 was independent of the prior radiation history of the transplantation site. Thus, there was no evidence of an effect of the irradiated normal tissue to inactivate or to kill the injected tumor cells. However, after transplantation of the mammary carcinoma into irradiated tissues, tumor growth was slowed and host survival was prolonged.
