Abstract

The theory of linear conversion of high‐frequency electromagnetic waves into electrostatic waves in a magnetized plasma is briefly reviewed, with emphasis on its possible role in experiments on the interaction between electromagnetic waves and plasmas, in the ionosphere as well as in laboratories. New results on the transition from magnetized to unmagnetized plasmas are given.
