Novel permanent magnet flux switching machine with outer-rotor configuration is presented for urban electric vehicle propulsion. Design improvements of the machine performance based on several geometric parameters are accomplished by comprehensive transient finite element analysis. Moreover, magnet segmentation technique is studied in the improved design to mitigate the prominent eddy current losses in permanent magnets. The particular comparisons between the original and improved designs are carried out by finite element analysis. The results further underpin the viability of the proposed machine with appropriate design as an appealing contender for in-wheel electric propulsion.
