Abstract

A theoretical study is made of an equation proposed by Glockler in 1934 for the variation of the ionization potentials and electron affinities of atomic systems with their atomic number Z. Writing I = αZ2+βZ+γ, formulae are given which enable α and β to be calculated. A table is included of Coulomb and exchange integrals for hydrogenic wave functions up to 4f orbitals. γ is shown to be almost constant over an isoelectronic series, varying only slowly with Z. The method is superior to other methods recently proposed for determining electron affinities. A correction is suggested for the ionization potential of A8+, and certain other ionization potentials and electron affinities are calculated and given in a table.
