Abstract Among 450 consecutive patients with acute myocardial infarction 20 have been paced by a transthoracic electrode because of persistent asystole during their stay in a CCU. In 19 patients a QRS rhythm was induced, but only one survived long enough to have the transthoracic electrode replaced by a transvenous one. This patient left the hospital without any disablement.
