Abstract

THIS CHAPTER is concerned with the value of theory to the study and practice of administration. The discussion of research in preceding chapters depicts in sum an obviously enlarging and important field of study in education. Implicit in the discussion is indication of the extent to which administration is being studied carefully with sophisticated conceptual and methodological means. A science of administration is emerging. Knowledge is being systematically derived from observation, analysis, and experimentation; systems of symbols are being used to represent a wealth of concepts; assumptions entailed in useful theory are being determined; and administration is being illuminated as the direction of human effort in organizations toward the accomplishment of common objectives. Improved theory in particular is stimulating research and administrative practice. This chapter attempts to make clear the relevance of theory to enlightened understanding of administration. Chapter divisions include the art and science of administration, the emerging science of administration, and the practical value of theory.
