Tympanoplasty: Should grafts be placed medial or lateral to the tympanic membrane?

Abstract

Abstract Since the introduction of tympanoplasty, there have been enthusiastic reports describing the use of skin, vein, fascia and perichondrium in repairing the tympanic membrane. Both endaural and postauricular techniques have been used. In the last few years most surgeons have concluded that fascia or perichondrium are the most suitable materials available for grafting. These materials have been placed either medial or lateral to the tympanic membrane.
