Defects such as dislocations and the tracks left by energetic charged particles may be made visible inside large crystals of silver chloride by a photoelectric technique, the net result of which is the deposition of metallic silver along the imperfections. The main advantage of this procedure in the study of dislocations is that large regions of the crystal may be observed in the cold-worked state. For the study of cosmic rays and nuclear events, a convenient and distortion-free detector is offered which may be of use in specialized applications.
