The performance of Gbit/s systems using 1550nm distributed feedback lasers and conventional single-mode fibres depends critically on the dynamic behaviour of competing adjacent modes and the stopband characteristics, in addition to the usual criterion of the time-averaged side-mode suppression ratio.
