Abstract

We study the stability of nonlinear modes beyond the ground state in quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates. We show that a local variation of the scattering length allows us to obtain multistable configurations of the condensate density. In particular, by means of our theoretical approach it is shown how to obtain a pair of stable ground states corresponding to the same value of the chemical potential.
