Abstract

INTRAVENOUSLY administered mannitol has been advocated in the treatment of recalcitrant ascites1 , 2 and impending anuria.3 We have recently seen a case of severe hepatic disease with ascites, edema and the renal failure of cirrhosis. The patient received mannitol infusions intravenously on ten of twelve successive days, during which he lost 18.1 kg. (40 pounds) in weight and severe hypernatremia developed.
