Abstract

Paleoshorelines and morpho-sedimentary units preserved in the Casablanca area form an exceptional Pliocène and Pléistocène séquence. This series has been studied many times since 1917 and played a central role in the elaboration of a Quaternary stratigraphie scale in North-Western Africa. The high resolution of this sequence, which has been demonstrated by recent data obtained m a France-Morocco joint research program, is a major reference for Moroccan Quaternary on the Atlantic coast, from the Upper Miocene to the Holocene. The morpho-hthostratigraphic system proposition in this paper is based on the identification of major sedimentary sequences correlated with global chronochmatic model. The classic stratigraphie system formerly established by Biberson in the 1960s and revised since several times by numerous authors shows major inadequacies with recent data and must therefore be abandoned along with the classic terminology.
