Abstract A sample of 268 primary school children drawn from 7 different schools were asked to “draw a map of the world”. These maps are analysed and categorised into 5 model types which show a strong association with increasing age. Exemplars of each type are reproduced and discussed. The results are compared with other investigations into the development of children's world knowledge. An agenda for further research is suggested.
