Data for the third- and fourth-order interactions of argon with the highly graphitized carbon black P33 (2700°) are presented. These data have been analyzed by means of a two-dimensional gas model to give an estimate of the interaction energy between the adsorbed atoms, and a new method for determining the surface area of the adsorbent. Relations between the two-dimensional gas model and a model which assumes pairwise additivity of potentials are discussed.
