Abstract Dimethyl 1,2-O-isopropylidene-d-glyceroylmethylphosphonate was found to react with aldehyde in the presence of cesium carbonate in isopropyl alcohol. Using this reaction the formal synthesis of d-erythro-C18-sphingosine was achieved.
