A temperature-sensitive mutant of yeast, ts(-)187, which is apparently unable to initiate the synthesis of new polypeptide chains after a short incubation at the restrictive temperature, is described. The existence of this mutant demonstrates that in eucaryotic cells, as in procaryotic cells, there are processes unique to the initiation of polypeptide chains.
