The factors determining the temperature distribution in a stellar atmosphere are divided into transfer effects and population effects. As a measure of the latter, we introduce the Temperature Control Bracket [TCB], which, in radiative equilibrium, describes the control of T by the quantity and spectral distribution of the radiation field. Algebraic expressions for the [TCB] are given in terms of the microscopic rate processes for a pure hydrogen atmosphere. A caricatured computation is presented to demonstrate the influence of the various physical effects on the distribution of T5 in radiative equilibrium.
