The use of energy storage is widely seen as an essential component of the electricity delivery infrastructure of the future, whether improving the quality and reliability of delivered power, supporting distributed generation, stabilizing transmission lines, or time-shifting consumption through bulk storage to achieve the most efficient use of baseload generation. Many of these applications involve the supply of short bursts of power, with discharge times ranging from milliseconds to a few minutes. This presentation examines present and future battery options for this segment, and provides details of the recently-commissioned golden valley electric association battery energy storage system in Fairbanks, Alaska
