Abstract

Let <inline-formula content-type="math/mathml"> G G </inline-formula> be a reductive linear algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic <inline-formula content-type="math/mathml"> p > 0 p > 0 </inline-formula> . A subgroup of <inline-formula content-type="math/mathml"> G G </inline-formula> is said to be separable in <inline-formula content-type="math/mathml"> G G </inline-formula> if its global and infinitesimal centralizers have the same dimension. We study the interaction between the notion of separability and Serre’s concept of <inline-formula content-type="math/mathml"> G G </inline-formula> -complete reducibility for subgroups of <inline-formula content-type="math/mathml"> G G </inline-formula> . A separability hypothesis appears in many general theorems concerning <inline-formula content-type="math/mathml"> G G </inline-formula> -complete reducibility. We demonstrate that some of these results fail without this hypothesis. On the other hand, we prove that if <inline-formula content-type="math/mathml"> G G </inline-formula> is a connected reductive group and <inline-formula content-type="math/mathml"> p p </inline-formula> is very good for <inline-formula content-type="math/mathml"> G G </inline-formula> , then any subgroup of <inline-formula content-type="math/mathml"> G G </inline-formula> is separable; we deduce that under these hypotheses on <inline-formula content-type="math/mathml"> G G </inline-formula> , a subgroup <inline-formula content-type="math/mathml"> H H </inline-formula> of <inline-formula content-type="math/mathml"> G G </inline-formula> is <inline-formula content-type="math/mathml"> G G </inline-formula> -completely reducible provided Lie <inline-formula content-type="math/mathml"> G G </inline-formula> is semisimple as an <inline-formula content-type="math/mathml"> H H </inline-formula> -module. Recently, Guralnick has proved that if <inline-formula content-type="math/mathml"> H H </inline-formula> is a reductive subgroup of <inline-formula content-type="math/mathml"> G G </inline-formula>
