Abstract Aliphatic and alicyclic esters are found to be hydrolyzed conveniently and without epimerization in concentrated sulfuric acid at room temperature. First‐order kinetics are observed. A Hammett rho value of ‐3.6 applies for the hydrolysis of methyl benzoates. Sterically hindered esters show increased rates of hydrolysis. These findings are in accordance with the A Ac 1 mechanism.
