Selection of propulsion motor and design of suitable transmission gear box are significant issue for designing an efficient drive train of a battery operated electric vehicle driving on Indian urban and suburban areas. In this paper we present, selection of Motor among different available electric motors, estimation of base power rating of selected motor, design of suitable gear ratio considering limitations of overloading and under loading operation to achieve longer mileage and safe performance of drive train. Dynamics of vehicle is simulated under MATLAB/Simulink environment and from simulated results base and peak power rating of the motor is estimated and apposite gear box is designed with requisite acceleration and gradability performance for entire operation in Indian Driving Cycle (IDC).
