Abstract

T NHE work known as Godansho iEfAtI, or 'The Oe Conversations', is a collection of some hundreds of anecdotes, opinions, traditions, bits of lore and information, queries, discussions, and thinking out loud. Some of the many items in the collection must have been copied from notes written in his old age by Oe Masafusa k1zrKf, 1041-1111, whose self-indulgence, disregard for propriety, and penchant for collecting unreliable stories provoked the indignation of a conservative contemporary, the diarist Fujiwara Munetada ,
