Abstract

Our data confirms that intestinal inflammation is underlying the delayed gastrointestinal transit observed after open surgery. Most importantly, we demonstrate that intestinal inflammation under laparoscopic conditions is significantly lower compared to open surgery, most likely explaining the faster recovery following laparoscopic surgery.
