Little is known about the existence, in other mammals, of a post-reproductive period comparable to the human menopause. Though exact data on most animals are scanty, it is believed that presenile decline in ovarian function is a typically human phenomenon. Even where, as in rats and mice, a decline of fertility with age has been established, it is debatable whether this is comparable to the climacteric loss of ovarian activity in the human female.
