Isolation of Measles Virus from Urine

Abstract

THE etiologic agent has reportedly been recovered from the urine of patients with a number of different viral infections (rabies,1 lymphocytic choriomeningitis,2 Russian spring-summer encephalitis,3 Newcastle disease,4 mumps,5 cytomegalic-inclusion disease6 and infections due to Coxsackie virus7 , 8 and adenovirus9). To our knowledge, however, viruria has not been demonstrated in measles. Isolation of measles virus from the urine in several typical cases of this disease is described in this preliminary communication.MethodsSpecimens of urine ranging from 2 to 250 ml. in volume were obtained from children with measles.
