Abstract

This work provides a breakthrough study of tourism. The authors set out to show how people developed facilities, accommodation and transport, and then how publicity and government support followed. Davidson and Spearritt demonstrate that it provides an important dimension to the social and environmental history of Australia. They are very much concerned with depicting the changing context of tourism: from a pastime of the rich, to the intervention of government in the early years of the century, and its new, explicitly-made connection with immigration and railways.
