Electromagnetic grating theories: Limitations and successes

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to inform experimenters of what can be done to predict from the Electromagnetic Theory the properties of gratings when their profile and the indices of the materials making them up are known. Four broad methods are discussed: analytic, semi-analytic, integral and differential methods.
