Cross-Cultural Issues in Information Systems Research

Abstract

The diverse multicultural aspects and emerging organizational structures associated with global information systems (IS) provide a rich area for extended research programs. The strongest programs will be built on a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary foundation and are guided by a strong theoretical model based on current knowledge. Such a model is developed in this paper to focus on a research program for international information systems, give participants a common frame of reference, and set the stage for individual project models. The focus of the discussion is on the effects of multicultural environments on technology development and use in organizations. A review of the nature of international organizations and processes is used to provide a framework for an explanation of the program. To illustrate this program, specific research projects in two substantive areas are proposed and described in detail. As the discussion progresses from the general to the specific, a system for developing research projects will emerge and be discussed.
