Abstract The domain structure of Zn 2− x Co x Z (with x = 0; 0.5; 2) single crystals is investigated. The observed patterns indicate a gradual modification from a barium ferrite type structure (for Zn 2 Z), passing through a cobalt type structure (for Zn 1.5 Co 0.5 Z), to a new structure, characteristic of uniaxial single crystal. This structure has a preferred plane of magnetization (for Co 2 Z), consisting of a set of parallel domains separated by Bloch walls parallel to the hexagonal plane. All the observed domain structures are explained in terms of the domain theory and the dependence of magnetic anisotropy on composition.
