Abstract

The relationship between vanadium present in fuels, alkali salts present in the intake air and/or fuel, and the accelerated oxidation phenomena called sulfidation attack was investigated. The relative vapor pressure of alkali vanadates was determined and based upon the available thermodynamic data, and it was found the presence of vanadium can suppress condensation of alkali sulfates. It was also found that alkali vanadates, are, like the alkali sulfates, highly corrosive with respect to nickel base alloys.
