Severe iron deficiency may cause thrombocytopenia (1, 3); this has been shown in children (4). We have been unable to discover any report of low platelets associated with iron-deficiency anemia in an adult. The response to iron in an adult with a severe iron-deficiency anemia and thrombocytopenia but with normal serum folate and vitamin B12 levels is described below; an apparent case of iron-deficiency thrombocytopenia.A 31-year-old black women presented to the emergency room with flank pain and hematuria of 1 month's duration.
