Abstract

A mechanism is proposed for ammonia transport across a cellulose acetate membrane. The transport is shown to have a sorption character, with the formation of hydrogen bonds between ammonia molecules and the polymer. Our experiments demonstrate that the membrane can be regenerated in the course of gas separation. The ideal separation factors in the ammonia-nitrogen and ammonia-hydrogen systems are determined.
