Fasciotomy in Peripheral Vascular Surgery

Abstract

Fasciotomy was performed in 164 patients in 20 years. Although there were 27 deaths and 16 amputations, in no instance could these be related to the fasciotomy. Fasciotomy is an important adjunctive procedure available to enhance survival of an extremity with alteration of normal distal circulation. The usual measures for treating a compromised circulation are seldom overlooked, yet fasciotomy is rarely used early when it is most beneficial. Indications for fasciotomy in a variety of important clinical situations have been outlined. Performed properly, it has few complications but has much to offer in reducing morbidity and saving limbs.
