Abstract

Abstract This paper deals with the applicability of the theory of fractal geometry on the pore‐volume V. It describes the porous medium [soil] by characterizing the pore‐size distribution over a range of pore sizes through a single number, the fractal dimension D. D is calculated from the relation Vp ± P D‐3 , where P is the pressure of the water‐retention curve and Vp is the cumulated pore volume. The fractal dimension D for the different pore‐size distributions ranges from 2.1 to 2.8 and is an intrinsic measurement for the degree of space filling of the different pore systems.
