Data from a prospective study of patients with carcinoma in situ (CIS) indicate that antibody titers of cytomegalovirus (CMV) were not significantly elevated among patients, either prior to the development of CIS or during the period that CIS was present as compared to matched controls. Patients who had been treated for CIS by cervical conization, however, had significantly lower titers than controls. This finding may indicate a localized cervical infection which was eliminated by surgical treatment.
