A simple route to the title compounds is accessible by the elegant and structure-specific cycloaddition–cyclodehydrogenation sequence (1 →→→ 2). Owing to the high temperature stability of the large polybenzoid C54 hydrocarbons, they can be characterized in ordered vapor-deposited monolayers by means of scanning tunneling microscopy and electron diffraction.
