Time constant measurements are a useful method for characterizing technical superconductors. The interpretation of measured pickup voltages may, however, lead to misleading results, because the signals are composed of an infinte number of exponentials. The complete theoretical solution is given using a slab model approach. With some modifications, the theory is also valid for superconducting wires. Comparison with experiments shows good agreement.
