A fluorescence karyotype for identification of 28 out of 30 chromosome pairs of cattle is presented in Fig. 1. The chromosomes are stained with and mounted in quinacrine mustard 100 μg/ml. The fluorescence patterns of the individual chromosome pairs are described in detail and presented in Fig. 2–5. It is not yet possible to identify pairs Nos. 26 and 27 with certainty. Homologous autosomes do not always have the same length, a fact not previously demonstrated in cattle. The fluorescence pattern described is reproducible and can therefore be applied in veterinary cytogenetics, genetic pathology and reproduction research.
