Abstract Electrophoretic mobility measurements and retention measurements on papermaking stocks are presented for fines‐free systems and compared with the results for systems containing cellulose fines. It is shown that the cellulose fines make profound differences in the pattern of retention behaviour, and that the results may be qualitatively understood in terms of simple heteroflocculation theory.
